As a parent who has lost a child, you oddly find comfort in connecting with other parents who have also lost a child. For a parent who has lost their child to a preventable incident, such as a furniture tip over, connecting with parents who have lost their child in the same manner provides a sense of understanding and common ground that is unparalleled. You understand each other in a way that nobody else can. You understand that reading about one more death from a furniture tip over incident is a heart wrenching pain when you realize that your child is not the last child to be injured or killed by a falling dresser. You understand the countless interviews that you had to endure to clear your name and rule your child’s death “accidental”. You understand the NEED to do something, anything, so that your child’s death means something.
In June a group of parents of children who have lost their lives came together in hopes of giving the loss of their child meaning. We established a nationwide network of parents who want to see an end to TV and furniture tip-over injuries and deaths called Parents Against Tip-Overs (PAT). I am honored to be able to work with this amazing group of parents to make real changes. Our voices are stronger together than they are alone. Our children’s voices will be heard.
This is the family I never wanted but I am so glad that I have. I am so grateful to work and know you all.
